Rob,

I definitely understand your situation. I'm from a very small town, and we live a good 10 minutes from any type of store (20-30 minutes from "the city"). That's a good thing to think about as well--but definitely goes along with my "getting out of the house" tip! I know I'm going to need to once in a while.

I lived at my parents' house for about half of college. In that sense I feel like I am in the opposite boat, I've done my time living at home, saved my money, and am now ready to move on to bigger and better things.

The hardest part about living at home, for me, was that I grew up in an extremely dull suburban setting. It might have been a great place for a family with children, but now that everyone in the family is an adult, it’s hardly an ideal location. Whenever I wanted to visit friends it was always a long drive and it became tiring and tedious very quickly. That’s not necessarily the case for everyone who is going to be moving back home, but it’s definitely something to think about for those who are.

Thanks for writing this, and I agree that internships provide valuable experiences. But companies and other entities usually get far more in return. I agree with banning unpaid internships. There is too much room for abuse. Besides, companies usually pay a low wage and offer no benefits to interns. Not a bad deal.

Eric,

Thanks for the advice! It's true -- the debt adds up quickly, and the small payments (usually less than $100/month) don't seem like they will make a dent. I know I was pretty surprised to see my total student loans after 4 years of school!

Your exactly right about taxes!

When you land that first job and sign your offer letter, you really do feel on top of the world. Unfortunately, when you start receiving your paychecks you realize how much of that you never see.

A word of advice for college students that assume they will take on debt today, and just pay it off when you are out: It is a lot harder then you think!

Cheers!

Amy,

It is strange -- it seems like a pitch would be a important part of learning about communications and public relations.

As far as your question, (I hope I'm understanding it correctly) I would write a pitch or at least something that catches their interest. When I have e-mailed releases to media in the past, I called beforehand to ask how they would prefer receiving the information (fax, phone, e-mail, attachment). Some people don't look at attachments if they don't know who they are from, and others prefer a separate document over a lengthy e-mail. Asking is probably your best bet, and then you can tailor it from there! Good luck!

Great tips! I agree making a pitch is something not discussed in the classroom (strange isn't it?) Anyway I just have one quick question when your sending a News Release to a media outlet, do you typically have a mini pitch with the news release pasted below the pitch?

Again very useful article thanks for sharing your experience.
